- ²Melvyn Grant¹ - The Fantasy Artist
- ---------------------------------
-
- Melvyn Grant, the artist who brought us the game box artwork for games such
- as Ballystix, Baal, and Carthage. Some of his work has been immortalised
- on the Amiga too, by such artists as Uno/Scoopex (The Eye picture in Zine 9
- is a great version of the Grant picture titled 'Dream Master') and myself
- (not released yet). This is just a bit about Melvyn Grant taken from the
- book "Dream Makers"
-
- Music has always been important to Melvyn Grant. Playing in a band takes
- him out of his studio and has, he feels, given him a freshness in his
- painting. Grant's pictures are notable for their strong composition, their
- convincing portrayal of the human form, and the interesting use of
- comparisons and contrasts in their imagery. Barbarian warriors stand with
- swords whose curved blades echo the sweep of the shield and the horns on the
- helmet; a half-naked woman who seems to rise up out of the dust is back-
- dropped by a soaring curved tower whose arching spires in turn mimic the
- antennae of a rearing alien monster; futuristic soldiers with weapons that
- resemble bulbous harpoon-guns emerge from a spaceship of whale-like
- proportions. In many of them the air is filled with electrical discharges,
- so that if we could hear them they would be filled with noise.
